NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and ac NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year NAIDOC week promotes the theme ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’. Recognising that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this land for over 65,000 years. We encourage you to acknowledge and remain conscious of the intrinsic contribution that indigenous artists provide to our industry.

We are proud to be presenting Ayuva Meenha, by Teho Ropeyarn during this year’s NAIDOC week. Teho is an artist and curator from the community of Injinoo, Cape York Peninsula, Queensland.

Reflecting on his exhibition, Teho’s states: “Ayuva Meenha is a cross-reference of a huge project spanning three years of research and stories recorded on country and stories that have been passed on since primary school…The idea was to record old stories both traditional and historical so it is there for future generation and am proud that I had the opportunity to work closely with my elder the late Rev Ama Mary Eseli who held a significant amount of knowledge along with many other senior elders; Papa Rusty Williams and other community elders and leaders.”

Onespace Gallery stands with our represented and presented First Nations artists, and people of colour globally as we collectively seek to eliminate the systematic injustices imposed upon them. We recognise and respect the Traditional Custodians of the lands, winds and waters on which our gallery stands.

DEPART is Onespace Gallery’s final exhibition fo DEPART is Onespace Gallery’s final exhibition for 2020, showing from 11 December 2020 - 30 January 2021 the exhibition straddles the old and new year and provides artists the space to offer meaningful points of departure.

As civilization wrestles with its own impermanence, creativity offers a way of being that navigates the uncanny, transcends borders, and provides a tether to alternate worlds. With the luxury of globetrotting not being a present possibility, we look toward the arts to become borderless.

Artists within the exhibition reflect on the idea that this year will not ‘conclude’ in the usual way, offering musings on their new trajectory’s, what they feel and how to even begin reflecting. Revealed within DEPART are tendency’s that we, as humans, turn to during times of adversity; seeking reassurance in spirituality due to our distrust in Western democracy, finding small comforts in domestic spaces, using art as a form of escapism and choosing to be optimistic whilst tentatively moving forward.

Curated by Taylor Hall the exhibition will present work by Ross Booker, Amy Carkeek, Sebastian Di Mauro, Dan Elborne, Tamika Grant-Iramu, James Hornsby, Sebastian Moody, Matthew Newkirk, Thomas Oliver & Zoe Porter.

'This work was made in response to my research into Japanese ama divers (female free divers) and is based on a photograph by Yoshiyuki Iwase circa 1940–1950. I have altered the original image by adding animal-like protrusions, seaweed elements, and scales to the figures in this image, suggestive of the ama’s connection to the ocean and their unique fishing practices. This particular artwork depicts the ama after a dive with their catch and emphasises their strength and the communal aspect of their fishing practice. ' — Zoe Porter

Onespace Gallery is excited to present Ayuva Meenh Onespace Gallery is excited to present Ayuva Meenha ('My Mark') a suite of linocut prints by Cairns-based artist, Teho Ropeyarn.

Teho’s work is collected by the National Gallery of Australia, he is an alumnus of the Museum of Contemporary Art (Sydney) Primavera exhibition program (in 2012), his work was curated into QAGOMA’s prestigious GOMA Q: Queensland Contemporary Art exhibition in 2015, and he is the recipient of numerous arts grants and awards in Australia.

Ayuva Meenha is Teho Ropeyarn’s first solo exhibition in Brisbane.

“Ayuva Meenha draws upon work previously shown at NorthSite Contemporary Arts (formerly KickArts) in Cairns, which was a major project spanning three years of research and stories recorded on country and stories that have been passed on since primary school. Teho’s idea was to record old stories both traditional and historical so it is there for future generations.

Writing for eyeline magazine about this body of work, author George Dann noted, "Ropeyarn illustrates the history and fate of his family and culture through works that display his talent as a carver and printer who takes risks and pushes the medium of printmaking”.

'Fragments of Ta Prohm: restoration (2020) investigates the shapes and movements created by the contrasting structures and natural elements in the temples of Angkor Wat, Cambodia. I am fascinated by the minute details of the bricks where the erosion from the environment has allowed new patterns and details to form. The engraving of stories from the Cambodian people within these temples is confluent with the patterns made from natural erosion. Nature itself has woven a new story that is unique to the Ta Prohm temples.'

Onespace is pleased to present SOOKii by Helen Mil Onespace is pleased to present SOOKii by Helen Miller which celebrates 20 years of her fashion label. This exhibition showcases soft sculptures, including textile-rich theatrical masks and costumes, limited edition digital prints. It also includes a collection of signature ready-to-wear silk dresses from the SOOKii archive. Garments as well as theatrical pieces created using recycled textiles will hang from the ceilings and grace the walls of the space.

Miller’s approach to slow fashion and sustainability is influenced by her Japanese mother’s post war and immigrant experience. The threads of scarcity and loss are woven into each creation and evidenced in the exhibition’s supporting dioramas depicting scenes of Helen’s garment making process. Each object is interwoven with themes of cultural identity, self preservation and acceptance.

In writing for the catalogue essay, Vanessa Van Ooyen explains: "Helen Miller instinctively knows the power of fabric, equally embracing its functional and symbolic properties. For the past 20 years, she has repurposed exquisite silk, shibori, brocade, plaid and indigo linen through her clothing label SOOKii. Miller’s atelier is more than a ‘dress shop’; in embracing the past life of fabric, acknowledging time and loss, stitching together and mending, altering and erasing, her beautifully crafted creations have a form and function beyond merely ‘dressing’ people."

Van Ooyen continues: "SOOKii seeps into the life of those who walk beyond the pink mid-century façade in Highgate Hill, and it has become part of the fabric of the local community—a place of celebration, comfort, consolation and encouragement. In another time and place, SOOKii would have been a kind of village apothecary, tending to the needs of both mind and body."

We would like to extend a big congratulations to L We would like to extend a big congratulations to LeAnne Vincent for winning 'The Flying Arts ‘Art for Life’ Award' and the 'Spotlight Award' through the Queensland Regional Art Awards.

We are very excited to be involved in the prize by being sponsors of the Spotlight Award alongside Art Words. In an unusual twist, instead of cash this award offers an essay of 1,000 words (valued at $1,000) from writer Louise Martin-Chew, to be written about the work of LeAnne.

LeAnne Vincent is a photo-based visual artist who creates conceptual art images that investigate human behaviour using themes of natural and urban environments and shared memories. Originally from the Mid North Coast of New South Wales she has resided in Queensland for over 20 years and practices art in her Ipswich home studio and Queenslander cottage.
Her art practice is predominately based in digital capture and the exploration of alternative processes including cyanotype photograms. Her art is often a blend of organic and engineered objects photographed in still life arrangements or overlayed images of natural and urban environments. As her practice is process driven, walking, exploring, observing, and collecting objects are vital to informing her work.

'Influenced by the 1933 Nazi book burnings, where over 25,000 volumes of text were deemed “un-German” and subsequently destroyed, ‘Where They Burn Books’ references the power, resilience and preciousness of knowledge, which is made increasingly apparent through the oppressive act of burning books.

These porcelain objects are strengthened through the firing process; they stand as martyrs to the written word, and in a contemporary context, they celebrate society’s unprecedented access to text and information.

Displayed among the grouping are dark forms that have been created from the compressed ashes of books which are no longer legible or beyond repair.

The title acknowledges the writing of nineteenth-century German Jewish poet Heinrich Heine, whose play Almansor (1820–21) was burnt in 1933 Germany. Within his play, Heine wrote: “Where they burn books, they will also ultimately burn people.”
