During May of 2020, Fintan Magee released a series During May of 2020, Fintan Magee released a series of artworks created during the initial COVID-19 lockdown. Focusing on two pot plants, each day Fintan painted the plants as a representation of resilience, growth and nurture. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Fintan states: ‘These works have been created in my studio during the Covid lockdowns. My inability to work with models or organise photoshoots during this period forced me to experiment with different subject matter. I came up with the concept of painting the same two potplants everyday for the entirety of the lockdowns. With each piece representing a day in isolation. My work is about story telling and my plan is create a narrative around me keeping these plants alive during isolation. Each work has also become like a meditation, the repetition of image and subject matter has allowed me to step away from building a concept for each piece and focus purely on the act of painting. This process means that each work becomes a 5-7 hour meditation. Helping my mental health during isolation while allowing me to tell a story of the human condition during the mundane reality of quarantine.’⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

You are able to view a selection of these works via the Onespace Gallery website via onespacegallery.com.au⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Onespace Gallery is proud to announce that represe Onespace Gallery is proud to announce that represented Cairns-based artist Teho Ropeyarn has been invited to participate in the 23rd Biennale of Sydney, titled rīvus. Open to the public from 12 March – 13 June 2022, the exhibition will bring together existing and commissioned projects worldwide around the theme of rivers and waterways.

The Curatorium for the 23rd Biennale of Sydney states: ‘Indigenous knowledge has long understood non-human entities as living ancestral beings with a right to life that must be protected. But only recently have some plants, mountains and bodies of water been granted legal personhood. If we can recognise that a river has a voice, what might they say?’

Ropeyarn’s inclusion recognises the vital need for First Nations artists to bring to light significant historical events and issues. Ropeyarn states: “My artwork reflects the continuation of cultural knowledge passed down from generations long ago, onto our Elders, who are now passing on all aspects of culture; language, tribal stories, significant landmarks and rituals, dancing and beliefs to the next generation…We are in a day and age where culture and grass root knowledge is slowly deteriorating due to Elders passing, our ever-changing lifestyle and social disadvantages in our communities. Practicing art, is one way of maintaining and developing culture, and has always been a part of Aboriginal culture. Through this tradition, it will preserve my culture in one way for years to come.”

The Biennale of Sydney has created meaningful dialogues surrounding Australia since its inception in 1973 and we are excited to see what Teho Ropeyarn will bring to the conversation.

Congratulations to all selected artists together with Artistic Director José Roca and his curatorium; Paschal Daantos Berry, Anna Davis, Hannah Donnelly, and Talia Linz, as well as the whole team behind the 23rd Biennale of Sydney.

Despite our current circumstances preventing inter Despite our current circumstances preventing international travel, Zoe Porter’s artworks are traversing borders and are currently residing in Japan. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Zoe's work has been included in the exhibition Ama Divers & Artists. Then & Now. Dive into Ijikacho & Jimbocho! from July 2020, an exhibition put on by the Ijika Ryokan Association, Toba Sea-Folk Museum, and the City of Toba. The artworks included in the exhibition are inspired by the traditional culture of ama divers of Ijikacho (Toba, Mie Pref), and historical depictions of ama in the ukiyo-e prints of Jimbocho (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Zoe's work in Japan is a continuation of her research trip and residency to Toba, Japan in 2019, which focused heavily on the local Ama (female free-divers). The ama have been recorded as early as 5,000 years ago and currently their numbers are dwindling yet this ancient tradition is still continued today. Zoe's works reference photographs taken by the artist, historical documentation of the Ama as well as illustrations of the traditional sea-folk and their practices in the Ukiyo-e.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To coincide with the aforementioned exhibition, a large-scale banner of Zoe's artwork Kaisō & Ama is on display in the town of Ijikacho, Japan. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Ruth Cho’s first online exhibition with Onespace Ruth Cho’s first online exhibition with Onespace Gallery, 'Australian Knockoffs' showing online from 2 May - 2 June, challenges the dominant Eurocentric representations in Australian art history, despite our longstanding cultural diversity.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Cho's prints included in the exhibition appropriate very familiar compositions from iconic Australian art images - including Down on His Luck by Frederick McCubbin; Spring Frost by Elioth Gruner; Shearing the Rams by Tom Roberts and Charles Meere’s Australian Beach Pattern - to question the exclusivity of predominantly white Australian identity through this art museum trajectory.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

“Present Surroundings takes us through a journey “Present Surroundings takes us through a journey of loss, reunion, and revitalisation by artist Elisa Jane Carmichael. Elisa is from the Ngugi people of Mulgumpin (Moreton Island), part of the Quandamooka nation that also includes Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) and areas of the surrounding mainland. Her ongoing relationship and concern for looking after these lands, seas and maintaining the cultural heritage of her ancestors are at the heart of her artistic practice.

The fluctuating relationship between the land and sea is explored through a number of works that speak to these nuances. The major installation Time laps and changes (2020) features a glimmering ghost-net encrusted with mullet scales in a talwalpin frame. The cotton tree is a common sight along the coastline and aids in holding the land in place, especially during rough weather and king tides. Here, the net is no match to prevent erosion at the hands of rising sea waters.”

Artwork: Elisa Jane (Leecee) Carmichael, Time laps and changes, 2020, Talwalpin wood and inner fibre, ghost net, recycled fishing net and fish scales, 148 x 214 x 4.5cm.

In Defense by Dan Elborne presents wieldable obje In Defense by Dan Elborne presents wieldable objects reminiscent of medieval defensive measures; drawing loose parallels between an era of unfairness and brutality alongside the nature of our current arts funding situation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The artwork is a responsive protest toward the Australian federal governments (Friday, May 13th 2016) "black Friday" announcement to defund 65 previously supported arts companies and organisations. This news follows a trend of continual attacks on the Australian arts sector since 2015, where arts funding has been severely cut alongside funding reallocations away from small-medium arts organisations and individual/emerging artists. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
