Featured in our current show 'Old Shields New Ways Featured in our current show 'Old Shields New Ways' curated by Trish Barnard is Djabugay artist Napolean Phillip Oui. Oui began printmaking to present his innovative interpretations of shield designs and had conducted expensive research into museum collections. Initially he created small marketable screenprints based on historical shield designs before extending his art practice to painting where he feels freedom to reimagine a new cultural direction. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Oui was introduced to the oil stick medium during his 2012 Collaborative Print Residency in Montreal Canada and he found that it allowed him to express his art in a ‘free flowing way’. Through his art Oui tells the stories of the rainforest in his authentic style and in a way that connects him to his culture and heritage.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
By combining smooth gradients and more loosely applied surfaces with geometric shapes, Scott’s works emerge through a build-up of layering, blending and masking. Each layer retains an autonomy, holding its own weight and sensation within the lively spaces created. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
'The works in 'Ocular Drift' are luscious celebrations of colour and light, shape and texture, a harmonious cacophony of tone, form and hue' states Catalogue Essay writer Lisa Bryan-Brown. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The small selection of remaining works from 'Ocular Drift' are available online. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Within our current exhibition 'Old Shields, New Wa Within our current exhibition 'Old Shields, New Ways' are a series of stunning Yalma (cross boomerangs) created by Michael Boiyool Anning.

Like his ancestors, Anning insists on using only rainforest timbers and natural ochres to apply the designs. His Yalma replicate traditional size and construction to maintain the integrity of his culture.

Michael is recognised as the foremost Indigenous artist in Queensland to revive a unique tradition of making artefacts such as Big-uun (shields) that were once used as weapons by the Yidinji people and Nalan Gugal (Firemakers). He was the first Yidinji man to reinvigorate shield making when he produced two shields for a contemporary Yidinji dance group in Ravenshoe in 1989 (two of which are still displayed at the Nganyaji Interpretive Centre in Ravenshoe).

See more of Michael's work within our current exhibition or via our website online.

Zoe Porter's latest 'Lockdown series' alludes to t Zoe Porter's latest 'Lockdown series' alludes to the sense of isolation she felt within a domestic setting during lockdown. It also considers our relationship to the natural environment and the impacts of climate change. These works depict a transformation of the human into a state of ‘becoming-animal’, in order to attempt to present an experience of dislocation and highlight the destruction of non-human animals through human impact.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Zoe states: 'This series of works grew out of a reflection on the last twelve months, which has been full of unexpected change and strange events, in particular the COVID-19 pandemic and period of lockdown. During lockdown, I became much more aware of my domestic and local environment, and I began to document the suburb I live in and the roadkill that I stumbled upon on my daily walks. I had also given birth to my daughter in late 2019, which coincided with the Black Summer bushfires; when we returned home from the hospital, we entered an oddly surreal, smoke-hazed home and brutal summer heat. The recent climactic catastrophes and global pandemic have highlighted the extremes that exist in society and our need to take care of our environment and biodiversity, particularly in an Australian context.' ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Two remaining works from this series are currently in our online stockroom via onspacegallery.com ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

During March, 2020 we were lucky enough to present During March, 2020 we were lucky enough to present an array of prints in ‘Mind’s Eye: Mapping the Landscape’ by Jo Lankester. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Lankester employs a range of techniques including intaglio and relief combined with collage and hand stitching to create a suite of unique state prints. The imagery depicted in these prints is created from memories associated with the physicality of experiencing the landscape. It tells stories of the journey, both in the landscape and through the act of printmaking in the studio.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Old Shields New Ways will feature artworks by four Old Shields New Ways will feature artworks by four Indigenous artists from Tropical North Queensland; Michael Boiyool Anning (Dulgu-barra Yidinji), Paul Bong Bindur-Billin (Yidinji), Abe Muriata (Girramay) and Napolean Phillip Oui (Djabugay). Curated by Trish Barnard, the exhibition presents contemporary artefacts and interpretations of the elaborate traditional historical shields that are decorated with important totemic designs. Each artist is associated with Aboriginal cultural groups who inhabited the rainforest region of Tropical North Queensland.

Historical shields and artefacts held in museum collections have powerful agency for transmitting cultural and social knowledge. Contemporary artists have re-engaged with artefacts that were once traded and collected for museums since the 1890s and reimagined the designs through the creation of fine art works while maintaining respect for ancestral precedent.

Abstract designs on shields that represented both animal and plant totems of importance, have been interpreted for innovative paintings and smaller marketable cultural objects evoking a ‘cultural renaissance’. Each artist has discussed the meaning of each design with Elders and gained approval to utilise totemic designs to demonstrate cultural continuity.

Old shield designs are not merely enabling source communities to reconnect with their past and reimagine the future of their artistic practice – artists have great respect for the ‘old people’, their ancestors who created the original designs and the transformation of the original purpose of a cultural design. Those ancestors are still considered to be present in the designs and the reinterpretation for contemporary art is negotiated according to cultural protocols.

NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and ac NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year NAIDOC week promotes the theme ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’. Recognising that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this land for over 65,000 years. We encourage you to acknowledge and remain conscious of the intrinsic contribution that indigenous artists provide to our industry.

We are proud to be presenting Ayuva Meenha, by Teho Ropeyarn during this year’s NAIDOC week. Teho is an artist and curator from the community of Injinoo, Cape York Peninsula, Queensland.

Reflecting on his exhibition, Teho’s states: “Ayuva Meenha is a cross-reference of a huge project spanning three years of research and stories recorded on country and stories that have been passed on since primary school…The idea was to record old stories both traditional and historical so it is there for future generation and am proud that I had the opportunity to work closely with my elder the late Rev Ama Mary Eseli who held a significant amount of knowledge along with many other senior elders; Papa Rusty Williams and other community elders and leaders.”

Onespace Gallery stands with our represented and presented First Nations artists, and people of colour globally as we collectively seek to eliminate the systematic injustices imposed upon them. We recognise and respect the Traditional Custodians of the lands, winds and waters on which our gallery stands.
