Pamela See (Xue Me-Ling)
Jelly for Dessert, 2019
Hand-cut Cansons Mi-teintes, 45cm x 52cm
This composition features a scalloped hammerhead shark and a diver, the latter of whom is brandishing a pair of chopsticks. The title references Chinese cuisine, which features both shark fin soup and jellyfish salad as delicacies. The papercut explores the intriguing dynamic where the species roles of predator and prey are interchangeable. Despite being listed on the IUCN Red List as endangered, the scalloped hammerhead is one of three varieties of hammerhead shark that constituted one-sixth of the Hong Kong shark fin market in 2006.
