Brown Lake, Ormiston Gorge (SOLD), 2017
Synthetic polymer on canvas, 60 x 80cm. Photo: Mick Richards.
I was always nervous to swim in freshwater away from home. One day, I went to the West MacDonald Ranges to a place called Ormiston Gorge. When I approached the freshwater, I ran straight in, putting my head underneath the water. After I came up for air, I immediately asked my friends “Have you been to Brown Lake?” The water in Ormiston Gorge felt like the water of Brown Lake, Minjerribah [North Stradbroke Island], and I felt at home there. It was the first time I felt comfortable in these waters away from home.
