Benjamin Werner
In Bloom

5 October – 7 November 2018

Onespace Gallery is pleased to present, In Bloom, an exhibition of recent work by Benjamin Werner. In Bloom will be his first major exhibition overseas and will comprise both painting and installation works.

Benjamin Werner is an Australian artist with a studio based in ‘Avalon’, a long-term artist apartment block in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley. Werner is one of a prominent number of current and former artist inhabitants’ alumni of the building and its mystique. Werner’s paintings revolve around the search for the sublime in optics and colour, borrowing from both additive and subtractive colour theories. His current practice involves oil painting, LED artworks and installations; all centred around his light-based studies taken from many cities around the world.

In writing about this body of work, Louise Martin-Chew says:

“Issues arising from rapid industrialisation and urban density are palpable in the developing cities of Asia, a broad region that has been part of Werner’s personal landscape in recent years. He has repeatedly visited Singapore, where forests have been his viewing point to overlook the night-time city. The atmospherics in these paintings were partly inspired by Werner’s experience of vast population centres, with clouds of fireflies transformed as lit circular shapes, re-rendered as glowing and coloured energy, a haze of warmth in the foreground holding urbanity at bay.” [catalogue essay, Louise Martin-Chew, 2018]
